sport iconsJoin us for comprehensive live blog coverage of the first Test between Australia and Sri Lanka from Hobart. Rohan Connolly is in the commentary chair on day four.
The first Test enters the fourth day with the strong likelihood the match will conclude on the fifth and final day. Here is how Steve Samuelson saw how the play unfolded on day three in Hobart:
STUMPS SCORE: Australia 0/27 (Cowan 16*, Warner 8*)
WHAT HAPPENED: Sri Lankan pair Angelo Mathews (75) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (147) defied the Australian bowlers for more than three hours, adding 161 runs for the fifth wicket before Mathews fell LBW to Peter Siddle. When Mitchell Starc dismissed Dilshan the game quickened with wickets and runs being compiled quickly. Sri Lanka finished 114 runs behind Australia on the first innings with Siddle claiming five wickets for the hosts. Australia, however, lost another fast bowler with Ben Hilfenhaus forced off the field with a side injury. Both Ed Cowan and David Warner survived until stumps despite variable bounce in the pitch.
WHAT IT MEANS: Australia lead by 141 runs with two days to go. The hosts will be looking to consolidate in the first hour tomorrow before quickening up the pace of the scoring. A total lead of 350 should be enough, even with Hilfenhaus out of the attack. Scoring is not easy on this pitch.
