Witnesses to a bashing and robbery in Melbourne’s east on Sunday night dispensed their own justice and forced three teenage attackers to wait to be arrested.
A 37-year-old Bayswater North man was walking on Railway Avenue in Ringwood East about 8.50pm when the teenagers assaulted him and stole his wallet.
Three men, aged in their early 20s, saw the assault and chased the teenagers as they ran away into a nearby street, a police spokeswoman said.
The attackers hid in the backyard of a nearby house – one armed with a shovel – but the three men encouraged the teenagers to return to the scene, return the man’s wallet and wait for police to arrive.
The teenagers, all aged 17 and from Craigieburn, are assisting police with inquiries.
