BERRY Street residents had a rude awakening early last Wednesday morning when a street sweeper cleared away the remnants left after the road was recently resealed.
Resident Marree Bruce said she awoke at 3.30am to flashing lights and noise.
“I came out on the street wondering what could it possibly be. There was a horrendous noise,” she said.
“At 6am I would have thought it was a little early, but OK – they are busy.”
Mrs Bruce said homeowners in a residential area would be subject to noise curfews and questioned why council would be exempt.
Shoalhaven City Council asset maintenance manager Mark Buckland said it was not normal for a street sweeper to operate so early.
“It is not something normally done in an urban area at that time of morning,” he said.
“It is a once-off following the final seal of the road.”
While Mr Buckland had been unable to speak with the operator he said it was likely they were trying to get through a schedule.
“We apologise for the inconvenience created and were just trying to clean up waste material.”
As the road work is now complete, there will be no need for further street sweeping.
