Bright idea… Capalaba s Jenny and Chris Mirow outside their dazzling Christmas lights display at 44 Larbonya Crescent. Photo by Chris McCormackEVEN Santa would be impressed with the glowing efforts of Capalaba’s Mirow family after they were crowned first in the Residential East category in the annual 4KQ Christmas lights competition.
Jenny said endless hours of preparation and years of collecting Christmas ornaments had enabled them to create their best display to date, which also won the best 4KQ logo.
“We’ve been doing it for seven years. Last year we won second place (in the Residential East category); it’s nice to top it off and win it,” she said.
Jenny said she and husband Chris had lived at 44 Larbonya Crescent, Capalaba, for 27 years, but decided to get into Christmas decorating to impress their grandkids several years ago.
“We’ve got six grandkids; the oldest is 17 and the youngest is eight. It all started with a few lights and decorations and went from there,” she said.
“Now we have tens of thousands of lights, and I can’t count how many Santas we have.
“It has taken a long time to get it all out and display it, but it’s nice that our neighbours come in and check it out while we’re setting it all up.”
Jenny said Chris had been out hanging lights and decorations from 4am daily for “weeks on end” before he went to work, while she had been doing her bit during the day.
“It’s all good fun in the end, and it looks really great at night. I’m not too sure what’s my favourite thing, but lots of people who visit like to tell us what they like about the display,” she said.
“We’ve got different displays around – a snow cave with bubbles and a smoke machine, a mini church, an Australiana display, and eight reindeers on the roof.
“Everyone is welcome to come in and walk around. It’s lovely to see lots of people wandering around checking it out at night.”
Chris and Jenny’s display is turned on daily from 7pm to 10.30pm until New Year’s Eve.
You can find their display at 44 Larbonya Crescent, Capalaba.
